WRAP Workshop

Origin of Wellness Recovery Action Planning™ WRAP

Mary Ellen Copeland created Wellness Recovery Action Planning™ (WRAP) after extensive research was conducted with people who experienced mental health difficulties, their struggle to stay well, and the strategies they implemented in their life that enhanced recovery.  Wellness Recovery Action Planning ™ (WRAP) is an individualized, person-centered, self-directed, recovery tool that heightens personal awareness and encourages the development of healthy strategies for managing distressing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Wellness Recovery Action Planning™ (WRAP) is a structured system to monitor uncomfortable and distressing symptoms that can help reduce, modify or eliminate those symptoms by using planned responses.  It also includes plans for managing crisis.

Wellness Recovery Action Planning™ WRAP as an Evidence Based Practice

According to Dr. Judith Cook, studies show that self-management --or a person’s determination to get better, manage the illness, take action, face problems, and make choices -- facilitates recovery from mental illnesses (Allott et al., 2002).  Self-managed care strategies are as varied as people themselves.

Using the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Evidence Rating Guidelines (1992), the research evidence base for WRAP is at Level IIb.  That is, there is evidence from one or more non-controlled, well-designed quasi-experimental studies that the intervention leads to behavioral or attitudinal change.

Wellness Recovery Action Planning and the 10 Fundamental Components of Recovery

(An editorial by Michelle Lewis, Advanced CRE)

Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) is consistent with, and responsive to, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Consensus Statement on Mental Health Recovery in every aspect. The following examples are derived from the “Personal Mental Health Values and Ethics”, upon which the WRAP workshop curriculum was built and provide evidence of how Wellness Recovery Action Planning™ is consistent with these components.  For more information regarding the “ethics and Values” of WRAP visit: http://mentalhealthrecovery.com/wrap_values_ethics.php

Consensus Components:    See the “National Consensus Statement on Mental Health Recovery at:  http://mentalhealth.samhsa.gov/publications/allpubs/sma05-4129/

Self – Direction:   “Self- determination, personal responsibility, empowerment, and self – advocacy are expected outcomes of WRAP”.  Wellness Recovery Action Planning is based on self determination – “it opens the door but does not dictate the path of an individual”.

Individualized and person – centered:   the individual creating a WRAP plan is the expert on himself.  Information forthcoming in a WRAP workshop offers choices not final answers in regard to an individual’s recovery path.

Empowerment:  Wellness Recovery Action Planning™ is the ultimate empowerment tool.  It is infinitely doable, totally voluntary, and a personal choice to undertake.  It empowers individuals by reinforcing the right to make choices in treatment and day to day living, as well as develop pre-determined plans to be implemented should crisis arise.

Holistic:  WRAP is adaptable to any modality or philosophy. The concepts and skills presented in WRAP are complementary to, and not a replacement for, current treatment.   WRAP can be utilized to address many areas of an individual’s life such as: mental health and co-occurring issues, housing, employment related issues, personal relationships and much more.  As one of the “key Concepts of WRAP” support is discussed at length during the workshop, and various avenues and opportunities in developing a strong support system are explored and discussed at length.

Non – Linear:   WRAP Planning includes opportunities for critical thinking and brings about self – awareness regarding the individual’s unique needs and triggers, as well as, development of a variety of personal action plans that correspond with different stages of distress. Should a crisis arise, crisis planning is also included in Wellness Recovery Action Planning™.  If a crisis occurs, it is not viewed as a failure, and is felt to be an opportunity for growth and further self-awareness which can then used to strengthen an individual WRAP plan.

Strength – Based:  In Wellness Recovery Action Planning™, individuals are encouraged to focus on what they do well and avoid negative self-judgments or the findings of deficit- based assessments.  Individuals concentrate on their individual strengths and away from perceived deficits as determined by themselves or others.

Peer Support:  Wellness Recovery Action Planning is a peer – run program that is rooted in the belief of equality.  No one has greater value than another.  Facilitators honor workshop participants and accept them as unique special individuals.  Participants are treated with dignity, respect, and unconditional high regard.

Responsibility:  As a key concept of WRAP, “Personal Responsibility” is coupled with the knowledge that each individual is the expert on himself.  As the individual exercises freedom to choose responses and take responsibility for his wellness, he often recognizes a greater power in his ability to respond differently and promote his own recovery

Hope:  Hope is the first essential key concept of Wellness Recovery Action Planning.  Research has shown that people get well, stay well for a long period of time, and do the things they want to do with their lives.  There are no limits to recovery.
